St. Francis Fountain
As the Creation Season unrolls, we are raising money to install a new and different version of our beloved St Francis fountain. The Vestry approved the new design and as of this, we need $7000 more to fully fund this. If you would like to support this rebuild, please donate; a donation tab is being set up on the Grace website. If you wish your gift to memorialize a loved one, please so note.
Many, many thanks to the parishioners, Grace Gardeners in the forefront, who have contributed extraordinary support to date.
New design, by Dawn White of Ponds ‘N Plants (See above for sketch; program balks at putting the picture near this paragraph). It incorporates both the colors in our yellow brick and in our grey slate roof. It will have a deep but inaccessible recirculating basin, which will greatly reduce our current fountain’s constant maintenance. It is also designed to be self-cleaning, through the filtering provided both by rocks and plants—mosses and ferns -- planted among the walls. Once the system stabilizes, the plants will remain green all winter.
And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. Isaiah 58: 11

- This fountain was a gift from previous generations and for 50 years has been a major architectural asset of our church. It represents a spiritual focus for the many Grace parishioners who share the Creation Spirituality particularly espoused by St Francis of Assisi.
- The fountain also serves as a water source for urban wildlife -- sadly lacking in hot, paved Brainerd. This water is part of our guarantee to provide 'food, water, shelter, and a place to raise young' we agreed to provide when we certified as an Urban Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation (# 128,150, effected in 2010). We consider its presence essential to the stewardship of our piece of Earth, in conjunction with our certifications with GreenFaith and Interfaith Power & Light.
- See Lisa Lemza, Kristina Shaneyfelt, and Jeff Workman for design and structure details.
- Lisa and/or Kristina will be in the Courtyard after both services this Sunday to answer questions, cries of outrage, and/or approval.
- BREAKING NEWS: the work may begin right away. We expect to demolish the existing fountain (recycling any available rock) and then begin the installation as the contractor (Ponds ‘N’ Plants) is able. Target installation: November. Working it out now.
